It’s amazing to be back! Thankfully about every six (6) months, I have the capability to travel to places such as Southeast Asia where our friends in Vietnam have been working hard to bring Yonder’s vision to life.

For those not familiar with the process of manufacturing, once an idea is conceived, it has to go through a process - the extraction and realization of an idea. It all comes down to forms of communication, from aspect ratio descriptions, material qualities and specifications, geometry, proportions, style and color, these are just a few of the particular categories in which the designer has to translate a concept into a formal blueprint. These blueprints are known as ‘SpecPacks’ or ‘Techpacks’ which both describe the product piece by piece both visually and verbally to best describe the desired outcome. Once the factories team reviews these documents, a project manager and a pattern maker work together to make 2D art into 3D forms.

With their knowledge in CAD modeling as well as hand-patterning, the team breaks down each panel needed within the assembly until they have every layer broken down to each individual component. They also order materials, trims and hardware that are crucial to the look and feel of a bag because materials effect not only the performance but also the appeal of the product to the consumers who need to like and buy into the idea once it’s at retail.
