ISSUE 005:
We kicked off the fall with yet another amazing weekend adventure. On Sunday September 8th, our dedicated group of trail runners took to the breathtaking terrain between Colorado’s Front Range and the ski resort of Winter Park to conquer the challenging High Lonesome Loop. A sixteen mile loop known for its stunning view of the Continental Divide and with varying elevations, this course proved to be a true test of endurance and skill. As we set off, we were greeted by clear skies and moderate temperatures, ideal conditions for a memorable day in the wilderness.
Quickly warming up, our journey began at mile 1.4 with a right turn onto the Devils Thumb Bypass, and our group lined up along a single track, surrounded by lush scenery and open meadows. Part of our mission is education, leading a controlled pace so that everyone could enjoy the last mile as much as the first, so our group took their time, appreciating the natural beauty while steadily ascending. At mile 2.7, the terrain became rocky, presenting both a challenge and an opportunity for everyone to hone their skills, mirroring the rigorous training regimens employed by professional ultra-marathon runners.
As the day progressed and we reached the alpine lakes and waterfalls, our runners experienced a familiar fatigue that shouldered the burden of their efforts. Climbing through thick brush and narrow paths, we took short bursts of power hiking interspersed with jogging that helped us maintain momentum. By the time we reached the top of the Divide, we knew we had truly earned the views—a reminder of why we love this kind of activity.
While the casual runner may not run the same distances or at the same intensity, the spirit of adventure exists within all of us and accepting the challenge at hand remains to be our common thread. As we descended along King Lake to wrap up our loop, our group carried not only the satisfaction of conquering a demanding course but also a deeper appreciation for the dedication that comes with being a professional athlete in the world of ultra-running.
