ISSUE 007:
Embrace the Winter Wonder: Running Through the Snow
Snowfall! Does this inevitably signal the end of your training regimen? Absolutely not. With the right gear and mindset, running can be a year-round endeavor. Yet, many runners let winter derail their goals. Perhaps the key lies in embracing a touch of "altitude attitude" – that playful spirit of adventure that allows you to discover the unique joys of winter training and even introduce training in other areas that have been neglected.
Here in Colorado, where snow falls rhythmically throughout the winter, I've observed a common pitfall: runners cling to the same summer training mindset, expecting the same benefits without adapting to the changing conditions. But the beauty of winter lies in its dynamic ebb and flow. By embracing the challenges, we learn to adapt, grow and discover new dimensions of our running. I personally take the time to include more weight training and conditioning into my regiment, while many others in Colorado maintaining their aerobic conditioning by swapping their shoes to cross country skis.
If you have non-runner friends, you may sound a little crazy by ignoring the internal voices that whisper, "It's too cold," "It looks miserable," "The roads will be treacherous." - Let the wind sting, the path be chilly, and the air be sharp. The only way to truly know the experience is to venture out and confront these perceived obstacles. Often, these perceived hardships become the most cherished memories of the run.
For some personal perspective, snowfall evokes a unique sense of tranquility. The snow muffles the sounds of the world, creating a serene stillness that offers a welcome escape from the daily hustle. I appreciate the pristine beauty of the snow-covered landscape, its sparkling brilliance transforming the world. And of course, there's the anticipation of a warm soak in the hot springs afterward, the soothing sensation and a well deserved rejuvenation.
But perhaps the greatest joy of winter running is the element of surprise. Each turn reveals a new, breathtaking vista, a constant source of awe and wonder. So, I hope you embrace the snow, embrace the challenge, and discover the magic of winter running.
